If a Cochlear Implant doesn't work for a child with no auditory nerve, there may be a new option in the US. Check out this recent story about a 3 year old boy implanted with an Auditory Brain Stem Implant.
This type of implant has been used in Italy for three or four years now, but this is a first Brain Stem implant for a child in the US. So exciting. Researchers are not sure if it will give the child full access to language but it certainly gives the child sound. Great video demonstrates the child's reaction to sound.
